Guling Supremacy

Indonesians have long been connoisseurs of cuddle culture. Our people are as diverse as they come, spread out in over 17,000 islands, and yet the one thing we have in common that is undisputed and nonnegotiable: bantal guling. Bantal guling translates to “roll pillow”, and mostly just called guling “roll”. It is a cylindrical pillow, roughly 2 feet long and used by everyone of all ages. The guling is a staple in Indonesian homes, a prominent bedroom essential.

How it Began

As immigrants to a new country, sometimes you cling to some small things which remind you of the life you left behind. For me, that small thing happens to be a pillow, an Indonesian hugging pillow to be exact. I thought, "it’s just a simple round tube kind of pillow, it shouldn’t be that difficult to find in US, right?" Apparently it is! And though there are similar pillows out there, it never feels quite right. Don’t get me started on the abomination that is the "body pillow!" I had to request guling from relatives who were coming to visit the US. But as my family grew, so did the demand for guling- first it was my wife, then my kids, other relatives and even friends. Despite being born and raised here, my kids know comfort when they feel it. My daughter can’t sleep without it and keeps asking for the ‘hug thingy’ to accompany her at bedtime. Thus, the idea to introduce this uniquely Indonesian hugging pillow to the US was born. We know that Americans will love the Hugglow as much as we Indonesians do! -Robert
